This semester BEBES has kept busy recruiting new members to join in the efforts of building awareness of birth and breastfeeding on campus as well as in our local community. On November 16th, BEBES launched a kick-off event for the 2nd Annual Diaper Drive. The launch of this year’s donation drive was a collaborative effort with the Gilling’s School of Global Public Health Human Resources Department, Department of Maternal and Child Health, and the Nursing School’s Women’s Health Interest Group (WHIG). Individuals can make donations in-person at the Gillings School of Global Public Health, the UNC School of Nursing, the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, the UNC School of Social Work, or the UNC School of Medicine, or online, until December 7th. Accepted items include books, diapers, wipes, and feminine hygiene products.
BEBES members will be delivering donated items to two non-profits in the local area that serve families in need: the Diaper Train and the Diaper Bank of North Carolina. Furthermore, BEBES members will volunteer a couple hours at the Diaper Bank of North Carolina to help sort donations. Students are looking forward to reconvening after the Winter Break, when BEBES anticipates working alongside CGBI with their grassroots approach of transforming Chapel Hill and Carrboro in a breastfeeding friendly community. Also, congratulations are due! BEBES was awarded a $500 grant from the Office of Student Affairs this fall. With these funds, a Community Baby Shower will be held in the Spring to provide free education and resources to pregnant and new mothers.
